We’ve now arrived in the Centauri Cluster, approximately 16,000 light years from Old Earth. From here, we’ll be exploring the planetary systems, tracking habitable worlds & uncovering more about the EXODUS universe. I’m Captain Figu, bringing you along the Gates of Heaven as we unpack each discovery.
Before we begin, a quick note: this will be another mega-lactic mission. Even without Garrus Vakarian to assist me this time around, I’ll be continuously calibrating this post as I dive in deeper into this universe.
For subscribers, I’d suggest to regularly hop over to my blog for revised updates. Thank you for your patience, it’s always an honor to have you here. 😉💫
1) Small Introduction.
My first contact with EXODUS universe was during The Game Awards 2023 (yes, it really has been that long ago). At the time, I’d just finished a full playthrough of Starfield & was craving for more adventures among the stars. After that first reveal trailer, I immediately signed up for the early Founders Program.
That moment ignited my fascination with EXODUS — a multi-layered blend of hard sci-fi & grand-scale space-opera universe built around humanity’s interstellar journeys. The deeper I explored, the more I was drawn into its rich lore, intricate worldbuilding & thought-provoking exploration of time dilation & post-human evolution.
After learning that former Mass Effect team were behind the EXODUS game development, blending themes of Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar (even Matthew McConaughey himself was involved in the game), alongside renowned sci-fi authors Peter F. Hamilton & Adrian Tchaikovsky contributed to the lore, I felt the pull of gravity. I just couldn’t resist!
Previously, I’ve also chronicled glimpses of this journey in my older blogposts & have been logging mini-diary updates on my Instagram story highlights. Now, the real exploration begins! 🚀
‘Before us, there was Earth. Remember where you came from. Remember why we left.’
EXODUS isn’t about saving Earth or heroic space battles. At its core, it’s a story about humanity stretched across time & space, leaving home not only to cross the stars, but to outlive its own era as it expands into the galaxy. Grounded in relativity, lightspeed travel, interstellar distances & time dilation, the universe primarily shifts the focus toward consequences.
The Archimedes Engine allows humanity to escape a dying Earth, yet at the same time fractures history & continuity. Civilizations rise & fall out of sync as travelers experience time differently, leading to deep cultural divides, evolutionary divergence & even extinction.
2) Expanded Medium.
EXODUS is rich with lore & worldbuilding.
It’s an expanding universe built around one central idea: space travel doesn’t just cross distance, it crosses time. The setting explores a far future where Travelers return to a universe that has moved on without them, reshaping identities, relationships & entire civilizations in the process. Every journey forward means leaving years, decades, or even centuries behind.
Imagine the emotional storytelling of Mass Effect, the grounded realism of The Expanse, & the time dilation concepts of Interstellar fused into one evolving universe. This blend makes it especially appealing to readers, gamers & sci-fi enthusiasts searching for a vast & immersive galaxy to explore.
Some EXODUS media currently includes:
🎮 EXODUS Video Game:
A story-driven action-adventure RPG set in a new sci-fi universe 40,000 years in the future. Players will fight for humanity’s survival against its own evolution & confront the effects of time dilation caused by interstellar travel.
It is being developed by Archetype Entertainment & currently expected to release in early 2027. The extended gameplay footage will be showcased during the Future Games Show 2026.
The official website is also packed with stunning artwork & detailed lore surrounding the Travelers, story entries, timelines, factions & guides to the wider universe. There’s also Founders Q&A with behind-the-scene insights, trailers compilation & discord channel.
Alongside Drew Karpyshyn leading the game narrative direction, the site also features short stories written by Adrian Tchaikovsky, which further expand the universe & its themes. Great materials & I recommend checking it out if you’re interested in deep sci-fi worldbuilding.
📚 EXODUS Novels (duology)
📙 The Archimedes Engine (Book 1)
Note: There was confusion earlier about where the books occur in the timeline. It has been confirmed by the author & the studio that both books take place after the events of the game. However, the timeline itself is not the main focus. The books are standalone, making them a great entry point for anyone curious about EXODUS or looking to explore in more depth.

I first read Archimedes Engine (AE) book back in 2024, & reread in 2026 before diving into its sequel. Below is an excerpt from my EXODUS book reviews:
My AE Summary Introduction:
Over 40,000 years, humanity has changed drastically but what does it mean to still be human? Should humanity evolve into something greater, or resist to preserve its essence?
Spanning over several millennia, Earth nears its demise & massive arkships were launched into deep space, carrying human settlers to various regions of the galaxy. Some had successfully reached habitable star systems while others were lost, leading to the gaps in technological & cultural development among the human populations.
In the Centauri Cluster, the first settlers established new civilizations & evolved into advanced beings known as the Celestials. With superior technology, extended lifespans & genetic modifications, they formed powerful ruling Dominions.
After centuries of absence however, one of the old Earth’s long-lost arkships, The Diligent, finally reappeared. Its arrival had disrupted the existing established power dynamics, sparking the Celestials’ perception of humanity’s place in the universe.
Despite these shifting political landscapes & rapid technological advancements, a group known as the Travelers continues to seek new frontiers beyond the Celestials’ control, driven by the space exploration & humanity’s survival.
My AE Overall Thoughts: (no spoiler)
EXODUS: The Archimedes Engine delves into the humanity’s future, technological wonders, time dilation, evolution & its implications of genetic modifications. Through multiple perspectives, the compelling narrative explore struggles of control & freedom, societal complexities & political structures between advanced & ancient civilizations.
This is a collaboration work between renowned sci-fi author Peter F. Hamilton, & James Ohlen, former Mass Effect studio director & co-founder of Archetype Entertainment.
As this was my first introduction to Hamilton’s work, it offered me a fresh perspective on his storytelling. Nearly 1000 pages, this book is the first in a duology, so be prepared for another ~1000 pages to slog through for the next book. The books also sets as the lore foundation for the upcoming EXODUS RPG game.
Before picking up this doorstopper, you might want to set the right mindset & manage your level of patience & expectations. Because yes, Asteria’s arse — I won’t lie, this is one hell of a commitment. The physical hardcover I have is also such a heavy chonk to lug around.
This isn’t a book to rush through in one sitting, I took a break in between & returned to it later. To fully appreciate this book, you’ll FIRST need to spend time navigating the expansive worldbuilding & understanding the backgrounds of multiple characters before the broader plotlines start to unfold & connect.
Some chapters felt like a combination of reading & playing, which wasn’t a drawback for me, but more of a hybrid narratives. I did find some dialogue among the Celestials & other species a bit odd & too grounded, with many of the interactions felt quite similar to our own world despite the advanced evolution. The contrast between biological aging & time dilation was the highlight for me, as it made me to reimagine the passage of time & its consequences.
The depth of the world was impressive, though the pacing was quite long & convoluted. The first half of the book required much effort for me, with plenty of names to remember & pages to reread, but the second half flowed better once I became familiar with the characters & settings. The glossary & timeline at the beginning helped me navigate the complexity, & using online resources to look up terms & concepts helped me to visualize.
4.5/5 — It felt intimidating at first due to its sheer volume, but the more I immersed myself in this universe, the more engrossing it became. If you’re a lore-junkie like me, you’ll probably enjoy diving into the slow-burn plot, massive scale of worldbuilding & detailed character work this book offers.
📕 The Helium Sea (Book 2) - no spoiler
By some Goddess-decreed miracle, I finally finished Helium Sea prior to its release, after my second re-read of Archimedes Engine! (that’s almost 3000 pages, phewh!)
In the Great Game of EXODUS, the wild cards are always the strongest cards, but only if you know how to play them well.
As Peter F. Hamilton expands the phenomenal worldbuilding of EXODUS, he keeps the same fusion drive powering this nova-level space opera: advanced technology, political intrigue, relativistic travel, time dilation, & humanity across centuries where every choice carries long-term consequences.
EXODUS: The Helium Sea picks up immediately after Archimedes Engine without wasting time & space (pun fully intended). All the slow-velocity buildup in the first doorstopper book, all the hard work you’ve endured, relativistically pays off here in the sequel. There were many characters to track in AE, just as there are many ships to track in HS.
Without ingressing into spoilery Gate, my quintessence mind accelerates around 3/4 through the book. The stakes become incredibly high & had me on the edge of my seat while my neural induction wrestled over which faction to lean forward. It gave me that adrenaline page-turner rush where I constantly needed to know what came next, as if I’m piloting my own ship in the Great Game.
My main nitpick remains similar to AE. Some dialogue still doesn’t fully land for me in HS. Personally, I still have some questions left & was hoping to spend more time exploring the other side of the Helium Sea itself. I actually wished for different outcomes & not because it was bad, but because parts of it felt slightly safer than I expected. The sequel is shorter & breezier in pacing for me, though some of the resolution definitely felt rushed.
Across both books, my favorite characters remain the same: Terence, Makaio & Daves. Even my bio-andy agrees. The overall grand-scale scheming blends masterfully with intense, eerie & satirical moments which I absolutely enjoyed. (have you seen the Mara Yama? That’s… something).
4.5/5 tons of antimatter — I liked Archimedes Engine & Helium Sea equally & honestly prefer them as a duology. Right now, I just need the upcoming EXODUS game, & that Celestial rejuvenation machine for my joints & neural perception enhancement.
Other Expanded Media:
📺 Secret Level: EXODUS Odyssey
Secret Level is an animated anthology series inspired by video games, & I watched all its episodes in a single day. It also features an EXODUS episode, a first look at the impactful decisions shaping humanity’s journey when effects of time dilation influence every choice.
🎲 Star Heist Tabletop RPG

This is the EXODUS tabletop adventure, built on a D&D 5e-based ruleset. While I won’t be playing the tabletop myself, the books are filled with stunning artwork & rich lore that I’m still exploring as I write this post, while waiting for the third TTRPG book to release. There’s also a series of Star Heist exploring the gameplay.
EXODUS stands out as one of the ambitious modern sci-fi universes.
I think this universe will mainly appeal to fans who enjoy Mass Effect, Interstellar, The Expanse, Dune, Children of Time & Hyperion book series.

In my opinion, they wouldn’t build this extensive level of foundational lore-depth for nothing, & the upcoming EXODUS RPG game will likely deliver a strong story with meaningful choices. While I’ve had a deeply engaging experience exploring the lore so far, I’m still cautiously optimistic & keeping my excitement grounded for what’s to come.
🚀 If you’ve read this far, thank you fellow Travelers. Feel free to share my post & subscribe to my blog. Until next dilation time! :)
